The Undergraduate Conference of Chinese Studies (UCCS) is an academic meeting held at UBC, devoted to planned programs of undergraduate research on a wide range of subjects related to the teaching and learning of Chinese Studies. A fledgling undergraduate forum held once a year by UBC Student Association of Sinology, the conference invites young scholars to present new research, engage in discussions, and build professional skills.

The theme of this year’s conference is Boundaries Transcended. We encourage students of Chinese literature and culture to ponder the transcendence of boundaries on the map of knowledge, texts, and ideas, in memory of all the connections we have striven to keep in the historic age of separation.

UCCS 3MT 2022 comprises two stages of competition. The Semi-Finals take place from February 1-28, 2022, during which presenters give 3-minute presentations on pre-taped videos posted on the Canvas website of the conference. During the Final at a Zoom conference on April 1, 2022, 10 finalists decided by online voting of general viewers will each deliver a 3-minute live presentation, without QA session after the talk.

In particular, the semi-finals of conference adopt the form of Vlog exhibition of 3-minute presentations, to accommodate as much attendance as possible. The exhibition has garnered some most distinguished research works from the CHIN 450+ courses in the academic year of 2020-21, with topics ranging from classical Chinese literature, modern & contemporary Chinese literature, and contemporary Chinese films.

We are honored to announce Renren Yang (Assistant Professor of Modern Chinese Popular Culture, UBC) as our Keynote Speaker, who will give a speech over “Transgressive Point-of-View” in reading of Chinese literature.

We would like to warmly welcome you to the conference, engaging fully in the discussions with questions, challenges, and new ideas. With the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays shining in the season, we look forward to spending a joyful and rewarding time with you at UCCS 3MT 2022.
